Work Service at SotA

At SotA, shared labor is essential, and attending means opting into that work*. This is not only how we sustain; it reflects a community model deeply aligned with our values. It’s how we are able to sustain, how we are all able to all participate, and the “many hands make light work” aspect of it all really creates a community where everyone helps uphold it, and everyone has space to engage in it fully.*We will provide work service accommodations for folks with access needs.

Student Work Service

For students, work service is in the morning from 9-11. Garden and Kitchen generally need the entire time, but when your group is on operations, you’ll sometimes be done by 10:30. Students rotate between:

  • GARDEN - we have a community garden down the street at community members Zach and Christina’s house! You’ll help plant the spring garden and help sustain the space.

  • KITCHEN - you’ll work with a member of our kitchen staff to prepare lunch.

  • OPERATIONS is like hosting - you’ll work with a staff member to help set up classrooms, straighten common areas, make signs (we are all so rarely in the room that signs are a huge communication tool at SotA), forage flowers for the dining tables, and do other things like that to take care of our community.

Faculty work service

Faculty work service looks a little different, just because we learned after a few years that often it is helpful for faculty to have the morning time to prep for class, etc.Faculty rotate between:

  • Lunch cleanup

  • Dinner prep

  • Dinner cleanup

Prep will be done with a kitchen staff member, but cleanup will be done with another faculty member. Faculty work service is typically 1.5-2 hours, and faculty will rotate between prep and cleanup.
