Story in Song
with filmmaker Celia C. Peters (she/her/hers)

Class limit: 15

Sliding scale: $0-$20

Ever notice how music elevates a film or television show? Music can give visual storytelling superpowers. We’re going to explore the relationship between sound and vision by listening in a different way. This workshop will help you better understand song as a narrative tool.

Our syllabus is a curated playlist with themes. We’ll listen to tunes as a group and then individually create a very brief story scenario based on what we heard - then, share and discuss. You don’t need to be a screenwriter or a filmmaker to do this; you just need to be a human being with working emotions and a little imagination. (If you are a filmmaker, this workshop will be a great opportunity to stretch a muscle that you may have been neglecting and think about how to add this priceless dimension to your storytelling.) However you’re coming at it, there are NO wrong answers.

Classes will take sliding scale donations, split between faculty and a different BIPOC organization.

For this class, 50% of the funds will go to Black Girls Code in Oakland, CA. Their mission is to increase the number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology.

Just a reminder that most importantly, we want to welcome you to this space. The scale starts at 0 so that there are no financial barriers to access. Give what you can, only if you can. 🖤
